Biography
Hoshea son of Elah became king over Israel in Samaria in the 12th year of Ahaz king of Judah and reigned 9 years . He did evil in Yahweh's sight, though not like the kings of Israel who were before him .
Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him, and Hoshea became his vassal and paid tribute . When the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshea, because he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt and withheld tribute, he shut him up in prison .
The king of Assyria invaded the land, besieged Samaria for 3 years, captured it in the 9th year of Hoshea, and carried Israel away to Assyria . The account explains Israel's exile as judgment for sin against Yahweh, idolatry, and rejection of his statutes and covenant .
