Biography

Mattaniah became king when Babylon placed him on Judah's throne in Jehoiachin's place and changed his name to Zedekiah . He was 21 when his 11 year reign began, and he did evil in Yahweh's sight according to all Jehoiakim had done .

Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon, whose army came against Jerusalem in Zedekiah's ninth year . The siege lasted until Zedekiah's eleventh year, when famine was severe and the city wall was broken through .

The Chaldeans captured Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, killed his sons before his eyes, put out his eyes, bound him in fetters, and brought him to Babylon . Jerusalem's fall included the burning of God's house, the breaking down of the city wall, and the exile of survivors to Babylon .

1 Chronicles names Zedekiah among the sons of Josiah and distinguishes him from Jeconiah, through whom the post exile genealogy continues .
