Biography

Omri was commander of Israel's army when the troops at Gibbethon made him king after Zimri killed Elah . After Zimri died, Israel divided between Omri and Tibni son of Ginath, and Omri's supporters prevailed .

Omri began to reign in the 31st year of Asa king of Judah and reigned 12 years, including 6 years in Tirzah . He bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for 2 talents of silver, built on the hill, and named the city Samaria after Shemer .

Omri did evil in Yahweh's sight and did more evil than all who were before him by walking in the way of Jeroboam I . He died and was buried in Samaria, and Ahab his son reigned in his place .
