Biography

Azariah, also called Uzziah, came to Judah's throne after Amaziah and reigned 52 years in Jerusalem . He built Eloth and restored it to Judah .

His early strength is tied to seeking Yahweh, and Chronicles presents him prospering as long as he sought God . His works included campaigns against Philistines, towers in Jerusalem and the wilderness, farmers and vinedressers, and an equipped army .

When he became strong, Uzziah entered Yahweh's temple to burn incense on the altar of incense . The priests withstood him, leprosy broke out on his forehead, and he lived separately while Jotham his son governed the king's house .

Azariah died and Jotham his son reigned after him . Matthew names Uzziah between Joram and Jotham in the genealogy of Jesus .
