Biography

Pekah son of Remaliah became king over Israel in Samaria in the 52nd year of Azariah king of Judah and reigned 20 years . He did evil in Yahweh's sight and did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam I .

In his days, Tiglath pileser king of Assyria captured Ijon, Abel beth maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, Galilee, and all the land of Naphtali, and carried the people captive to Assyria . Hoshea son of Elah conspired against Pekah, struck him down, killed him, and reigned in his place in the 20th year of Jotham son of Uzziah .

During Pekah's reign, he and Rezin king of Syria came up to wage war against Jerusalem, but they could not conquer it . Isaiah's account places the same pressure on Judah in the days of Ahaz and gives the sign of Immanuel in that setting .
